Friends,
The end of 2004 and the beginning of 2005 have brought the
closing of three dog tracks in just four months!
These successes have been the result of continued market
pressures, the blocking of further subsidies to the industry
by advocates, as well as several high profile campaigns
surrounding the illegal and cruel activities of the greyhound
industry.
Our Florida victory, defeating slot machine legislation,
is an example of the work that is being done to counter
greedy dog track owners nationwide. Please read below for
the details of all these great events for greyhounds!
If you would like to ensure that this momentum continues,
please make an immediate donation to our efforts. Because
our campaigns are continuing to expand and our professional
structure continuing to grow, we need your help more than
ever to make sure that all greyhounds, in every racing state,
receive help now.
You can make a donation right away by using the secured
server below, or by sending a donation to:

In closing, we would like to send a special thank you to
Jake Roth of Ontario, Canada. After learning about the suffering
of greyhounds from his grandmother, 13-year-old Jake called
the GREY2K USA office to learn how he could assist with
our efforts.
The result was a special school fundraiser in which Jake
raised almost $1,000 for GREY2K USA. He educated his fellow
students about the cruelty of dog racing and plans to continue
doing so with future events for the greyhounds. Hats off
to Jake!
For the greyhounds,

Greyhound advocates are cheering the news that Plainfield
Greyhound Park has announced its closing as of May 14, 2005.
Track owner Karen Keelan entered a formal partnership with
car racing promoter, Gene Argenese and has decided to build
a new domed facility with restaurants, shops, and a raceway
where hot rods will replace greyhounds. The motto Race Cars,
Not Dogs has truly become a reality in Connecticut!
While there is speculation that the new partnership may
decide to hold special greyhound races beginning in 2006,
the fact that kennels are being dismantled indicates greyhound
racing may well be finished forever.
For the moment, a number of dogs will soon need homes. Most
of the 1200 Plainfield dogs will simply be sent to other
tracks to race, and sadly, they will be beyond our reach.
This is the heartless nature of greyhound racing.
It is estimated, however, that 200-300 greyhounds will be
surrendered, and available for adoption once final decisions
are made. If you are interested in being placed on a waiting
list for adoption, please call Greyhound Friends of Hopkinton,
Massachusetts at 508-435-5969.
To help immediately, please consider adopting a new friend
from a rescue kennel near you. By doing so, a spot will
be opened for incoming greyhounds from Connecticut and other
racing states.

The only greyhound track in Vietnam, which closed for eight
months following the deaths of twelve greyhounds, reopened
again on April 23, 2005. The Vung Tau Racetrack hosted a
full schedule of races, involving two hundred dogs, to commemorate
the event.
In August 2004, ten dogs died from their kangaroo-based
diet, and two others later contracted kidney disease, amounting
to 100 deaths by poisoning over four years at Vung Tau.
The track’s operator, Sports Entertainment Services,
has now announced plans to bring dog racing to cities such
as Ha Noi, HCM City and Can Tho. You can help stop this
dangerous expansion by sending letters to the South Vietnamese
government. Personal letters sent by regular mail will be
the most effective.
Please let the Prime Minister know that dog racing should
not be tolerated because it is cruel and inhumane. Let him
know that the trend in the United States and in other countries
is to close down facilities, not authorize them.
You can send your letter to:
